Insurance giant Aon has appointed Andrew Appel as chief executive of the reinsurance arm of its operation.

He takes over after a spell at the helm of the consulting division of the firm.

In addition to his new role he will also act as chairman of Aon consulting.

Greg Case, president and chief executive of Aon corporation, said: "In this role, Andrew is joining Aon Re Global to partner with Executive Chairman Mike O'Halleran, the architect, founder and market face of our reinsurance business.

"Our reinsurance team is the best in the world... under the leadership of Mike, Andrew and our team, I continue to be very excited about the future of Aon Re Global."

Mr Case complimented Mr Appel on a job well done at Aon Consulting by saying he and his team had "done a phenomenal job".
