RAC predicts bank holiday hold-ups
Car insurance customers setting off on long journeys this bank holiday have been warned to expect long delays in certain parts of the country.

The RAC is predicting a number of "congestion hotspots" this coming Monday, as the summer holidays come to an end.

With several festivals also taking place and engineering work on the west coast and midland mainline train routes, the organisation is anticipating higher volumes of traffic on the UK's roads.

Iain Vale, RAC Patrol of the year, said as the summer has been cooler, many families may have put their beach holiday plans on hold until now.

"This is the last bank holiday before Christmas and to make the most of it drivers need to leave plenty of time for their journeys, and, where possible, avoid the Friday rush," he recommended.

It has warned motorists to expect delays on several routes, including the M4, M5 and A303 to the west of England and the M6 and A590 to the Lake District.

However, according to the AA, 56 per cent of motorists said they would not be travelling this bank holiday, with 23 per cent citing the rising cost of petrol as the reason for staying at home.
