Motorists 'slowing down'
Fewer drivers in one part of Scotland are being caught speeding, suggesting that drivers are increasingly complying with the law, it has been claimed.

The Scotsman reports that in the Lothian and Borders region, speed cameras caught 27,751 drivers in 2007-08, compared with 46,266 in 2006-07.

Colin McNeill, partnership manager for the Safety Camera Partnership, said more people were becoming "accustomed to speed management" and there is greater awareness of cameras among motorists.

"Whether they're doing it out of social responsibility or whether they're doing it out of personal fear is a difficult one to reckon, but the good thing is that it seems people are becoming more compliant," he remarked.

However, recent research by RoadPilot found many drivers could be risking fines and higher car insurance premiums by choosing to speed.

Some 71 per cent of motorists surveyed by the firm said they exceeded the speed limit on more than a quarter of the journeys they make.
