Residents in Dundee who want to avoid a home insurance claim are being urged to take security more seriously.

Tayside police warned too many householders were making it obvious to burglars when their properties are unoccupied.

Officers issued this advice after 11 addresses were broken into during the past week.

They revealed all of the houses were obviously empty at the time and had little in the way of security.

Divisional crime prevention officer Colin Brough commented: "We want all householders to think about their home security and make life as difficult as possible for the opportunist housebreaker."

Residents in the city were warned they should all be on their guard, as no specific areas were being targeted.

People were also advised a number of the recent burglaries could have been avoided if householders had simply taken a little more care.

This comes after police reported the festive season had been ruined for a number of families in the city, after thieves stole their Christmas presents last month.
