West Yorkshire police have revealed since the start of October last year, some 33 per cent of burglaries in the district have not required forced entry.
Inspector Terry Murgatroyd said break-ins were not a major problem in the area , but added a significant proportion could have been prevented very easily.
He stated: "It doesn't take two seconds to lock doors and windows, but it can take a lot longer to sort the insurance claim out afterwards if you don't."
According to West Yorkshire police, there are a number of things people can do to avoid a sneak-in burglary.
The force reminded residents never to leave keys in the locks of doors or windows.
It also urged householders to avoid leaving valuables near windows.
Meanwhile, police in Bradford recently declared a re-launched scheme - which involves officers keeping en eye on empty properties - has been a success.
