Home security 'key to burglary battle'

Home security 'key to burglary battle'
Homeowners must contribute more if the battle to cut burglary numbers is to be successful, according to Humberside police.

Five households in the Grimsby area are likely to be contacting their home insurance providers for help following a succession of break-ins on Monday January 26th.

Poor property security played a part in all the incidents, as criminals took advantage of insecure doors to gain entry and make off with electronic goods.

At one residence, the thieves took car keys and drove off in the resident's Ford Focus.

Detective Superintendent Mark Smith said preventing property crime remains a priority for the force, but insisted that police action alone would not be enough to foil the burglars.

"I would ask that residents and homeowners look at what can be done to help reduce the risk and work with us to tackle these opportunist criminals," he said.

Among the home security measures recommended by Humberside police are fitting deadlocks to all exterior doors, installing window locks and keeping valuables in places that cannot be seen through windows.

Other police forces have suggested that people mark electronic goods and other valuables with an ultra-violet security pen, as it makes stolen goods easier to identify.ADNFCR-1058-ID-18998454-ADNFCR
