Pets don't 'require home insurance amendment'
Buying a pet should not necessitate any changes to one's home insurance policy, an expert in the sector has suggested.

A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers said this week that apart from making sure the house is safe, there is not a "huge thing" that needs amending on the policy.

An example of this would be if the owner has a job, goes to work and leaves the back door unlocked.

"That would have an impact on your home insurance," she explained.

The representative also mentioned the fact that repairs required in a property due to pets are not often covered in a house cover agreement, so it could be worth checking the small print.

"Pets damaging carpets and that sort of thing might not be covered," she said.

Consumers needing to update, change or buy new house insurance may want to buy both buildings and contents policies from the same provider, although this is not compulsory.
