'Notify car insurance providers of modifications'
Vehicle owners who have modified their motors need to let their car insurance provider know, it has been reported.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) explained this was necessary, as it may affect the cost of cover.

It stated if the changes made the car desirable to thieves, costly to repair or at higher risk of an accident, premium prices may rise.

The organisation said it is vital car insurance providers are notified of modifications, as failing to do so can invalidate cover.

ABI spokesman Malcolm Tarling also urged people to be cautious about getting out their tool boxes and making changes themselves, without the required expertise.

"While I am not an expert on car mechanics, people should not attempt any modifications unless they know what they are doing," he stated.

Meanwhile, car insurance holders may find certain changes - such as improvements to a vehicle's security - could result in premiums getting cheaper.
