Motorists looking for a small vehicle that should qualify for cheap car insurance and help them make savings at the pump may be impressed by the latest addition to the Fiat 500 line-up.

According to the manufacturer, the Start&Stop version of the model comes with technology which automatically switches the engine off when at a standstill and restarts it when the driver is ready to move off.

Managing director Andrew Humberstone said: "This is an important development for the 500 as it will help to make what is already a fuel-efficient, value-for-money car an even greater consideration for town and city drivers."

Figures provided by Fiat suggest the 1.2-litre engine edition of the model will offer fuel savings of up to 12 per cent, compared with the standard version.

They also revealed the motor boasts CO2 emissions of 113 g/km.
