Following Spain's example 'could cut car insurance claims'
The number of high-cost car insurance claims made in the UK could be reduced if the country tried to emulate Spain's road safety record, it has been suggested.

According to the Association of British Drivers, the government could learn a lot from its European counterpart.

It explained, despite both nations having similar numbers of cars on the road, Britain had 2,946 traffic fatalities in 2008 compared with the 2,182 seen in Spain.

Over the past 15 years, Spain has halved the number of road deaths, while Britain has achieved a fall of 20 per cent, it added.

However, spokesman Nigel Humphries said even this reduction had little to do with the British government and more to do with car design developments.

"Without this, it is likely UK casualties would have risen. Road safety policy here can take little credit for our miserable achievement," he insisted.

Motorists may find the average cost of car insurance in countries where road safety is poor is higher than in those where accidents are less commonplace.
