Many car insurance customers 'will downsize'
People considering trading in their current motor for a smaller model that qualifies for cheaper car insurance are probably not alone, it has been suggested.

Which Car? has predicted getting rid of large gas-guzzling vehicles for more fuel-efficient options will be a significant trend in 2009.

According to the magazine, this is because motorists are looking to cut costs and also it is becoming less socially acceptable to drive things like 4x4s, unless you are a farmer.

The consumer guide recommended high-mileage drivers consider a Mazda6 rather than something like the BMW 3 Series.

It pointed out it costs less to buy, is cheaper to run and comes with a more impressive standard equipment specification.

What Car? editor Richard Headland said: "It pays to think carefully about alternatives to the mainstream choices and if you go for a more fuel-efficient car you can cut costs for years to come."

Buyers may also find opting for a vehicle with a smaller engine means they save money on their motor insurance premiums.
