Any telephone call 'can distract a driver'
Businessmen and women who spend a lot of time of the road could be jeopardising the great deal they secured on their over-50s car insurance by taking telephone calls behind the wheel, if has been suggested.

RoadSafe pointed out - even when using a hands-free kit - drivers increase their chances of being involved in an accident.

This comes after a company director became the first person in the UK to be convicted of careless driving for a collision that occurred while she was using such a device.

Lynne-Marie Howden was involved in a crash during which another road user was killed in 2007.

She was found not guilty of causing death through dangerous driving, but was fined £2,000 and received a 12-month ban for careless driving.

RoadSafe's legal advisor, David Faithful, said: "The verdict sets a clear precedent and has significant impact for the entire fleet industry and business community."

Drivers who have built up an impressive no-claims bonus mat find the cost of their car insurance rises quite steeply if they receive a conviction for a motoring offence.
