As the credit crunch tightens its grip on motorists' wallets, some may be considering downsizing to reduce the cost of their over-50s car insurance - and Kia has claimed it might have just the thing.

The Soul is due to arrive in UK showrooms at the beginning of March and, while it is officially a supermini, the manufacturer described it as offering the flexibility of an SUV or MPV.

Chief designer Peter Schreyer said he was confident customers would be impressed by the new model's style.

He predicted it would be the first Kia car where buyers would ask about accessories and colour options before checking the cost.

"It is our accelerator for an image shift towards design," Mr Schreyer concluded.

For motorists who like to stand out from the crowd, the vehicle comes with a variety of personalisation options.

Prices start at under £10,500.
