Eco-coasting is "a step too far"

Eco-coasting is
Some drivers are taking their efforts to save money "a step too far" and could be risking a car insurance claim, it has been reported.

According to Kwik-Fit, a worrying new trend - known as eco-coasting - has developed among cash-strapped motorists in the UK.

Research by the company found 15 per cent of vehicle owners are putting their cars into neutral when travelling downhill in order to save fuel.

Kwik-Fit said the practice was dangerous as motors can quickly pick up speed and - before they know it - eco-coasters could end up ploughing into the road user in front.

Drivers were also advised they may not cut costs by going into neutral, as any money saved at the pumps would probably be wiped out by premature ageing of the brakes.

When asked about the phenomenon, customer services director at Kwik-Fit David White commented: "The associated dangers make it a money-saving step too far."

Meanwhile, Kwik-Fit recently reported 14 million Brits take the car someone is driving into consideration before agreeing to go out with them.
