BRITISH HOUSEHOLDERS FAILING TO PROTECT THEIR HOMES FROM WINTER WEATHER
Householders are risking financial heartbreak by not protecting their homes from the winter weather, according to a new survey.

The cost of a burst pipe claim can reach £3,500 and as temperatures start to drop, research by leading insurer, Cornhill Direct, shows that many people are neglecting to winter-proof their homes.

The survey of 1,000 people showed that:

• 43 per cent said they have no protective lagging around water pipes
• 30 per cent have no protective lagging around their water tank
• 1 in 10 people do not know the location of their stopcock in the event of a burst pipe
• 1 in 10 people admitted that they took no precautions to protect their home from the winter weather if they were going away such as turning off the stopcock
• 38 per cent of people do not believe there is anything they can do to protect their homes from a severe drop in temperature
• The residents of Scotland and the South West are most likely to suffer damage caused by a burst pipe

Simon Coughlin, spokesman for Cornhill Direct, said: “The winter weather is the biggest cause of domestic emergencies. When a cold snap bites, pipes can freeze and overworked central heating systems break down.

“Before it gets too cold, people should inspect their pipes for cracks, leaks or other damage. Learn where the stopcock is so you can limit water damage if a pipe bursts.”

During the last 12 months, nearly 50 per cent of callers to Cornhill Direct’s 24hr Home Emergency helpline have needed immediate help with plumbing or drainage problems caused by burst pipes or blocked drains. A further 23 per cent of callers reported problems with their heating systems.

Simon Coughlin added: “More than 50 per cent of people do not know if their insurer provides an emergency helpline. People should keep this number to hand in case they need it this winter.”
